Many of the methods and concepts used in organizations as far as human resources are concerned, were first developed and applied in military environment.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the management became interested in finding ways of increasing the employees’ productivity. Following the experiments which were aiming to find the factors that influence performance at the working place, the researchers discovered an interesting fact: the increase in productivity was partially due to the fact that the employees knew they were being studied. This phenomenon is known as the Hawthorne effect, after the name of the factory where these experiments took place.
